Why Alberta has the highest take-home pay

Alberta's provincial income tax starts at 8% on the first C$61,200 and tops out at 15% above C$370,220. More importantly, Alberta has no surtax (unlike Ontario, which adds 20% or 36% on top of provincial tax above threshold amounts), no health premium (Ontario charges up to C$900/year) and no provincial sales tax. The provincial basic personal amount of C$21,872 also shelters more income from provincial tax than most other provinces.

The result varies by income. At lower salaries the gap is modest โ€” at C$100,000, Albertans keep around C$209 more per year than Ontarians. The advantage grows sharply above C$125,000 where Ontario surtax and health premium compound: at C$150,000 the gap is around C$3,140 per year, and at C$200,000 around C$6,561. All figures are before the PST/HST spending advantage.
