UK tax system in 2025/26 — quick reference

The UK tax year runs from 6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026. Most workers pay income tax under PAYE (Pay As You Earn), where tax is deducted from salary before you receive it. The self-employed file a Self Assessment return each January.

The £12,570 personal allowance tapers away for incomes above £100,000 — losing £1 of allowance for every £2 earned over £100,000, creating a 60% effective marginal rate between £100,000 and £125,140.
